Holiday Gifts – Does Shopping Early Help?

November 28th, 2009

Marilyn Franklin asked:

Holiday gifts can sometimes bring joy to many but for the those of us that are not good planners buying the right holiday gifts may lead to stress and bigger hole in our pockets. When I was younger I laughed at my sister. She would start buying presents for Christmas way before I even thought about it. She’s the one that wakes up at 3 am to go to early bird shopping events that many of the brand name department stores run. I would run into stores on Christmas Eve where it was crowded and the atmosphere was not a gleeful.

The turning point in my life was when I started seeing the disappointment on the face of some members in my family when I couldn’t find something that I had promised because I had waited. My pocketbook also suffered because when I did find that hot gift it was at the highest price of the season.

Here is a list of some of the benefits of shopping early for your holiday gifts:

* The presents you find are usually cheaper

* A wider variety of products are available that can generate gift ideas

* The special hot gift of the season is in stock

* Online Shopping sites usually offer some form of free shipping

If you shop early department stores in particular offer a variety of early bird specials. You can save a lot of money on specific things on your list. You can do this by flipping through the circulars that are available on or before Thanksgiving as they publicize their specials and their Black Friday deals for holiday gifts. The trick here is to make sure you know what you are looking for before you go shopping. If you know you want to get your mother or sister a bed in a bag set be sure to see if there are any specials offered at certain stores. Even if you shop online finding deals on holiday gifts is getting easier as online merchants are running their own Black Friday specials.

The later you shop the less choices you are going to have. Even if money is not a consideration if you are looking for the latest hot product like the IPod Touch or something like that if you try to get that the day before Christmas you may have a hard time finding it. The wider variety of products available when you shop early also helps you to actually think about gift ideas for people for whom you have not decided what to buy. More often than not stores order a certain amount of a certain product and if becomes hot or they underestimated the demand it can run out of stock quickly. If you have a list of holiday gifts for the latest gaming system or the latest video game or something similar shopping early is your best bet to get it before the stores run out.

If you are an online shopper or find that the gifts you are looking for can only be found online shopping early will also usually save you money on shipping costs. As the holidays get closer the free option for shipping usually gets harder to find. One or Two day shipping options can be very expensive especially if your gift is something heavy.

So as you can see shopping early does help you not only save money on your holiday gifts but it also increases the chances that you will get the best gifts for your loved ones. As my sister says “planning is key”, start flipping through those circulars and surfing your favorite online shopping sites now.

Touch Technology: How it Works

November 16th, 2009

Rebecca Beckett asked:

The main technology that makes the touchpad and touch screen panel work is called capacitive technology. Touch sensors can be found dating back many years. However, they have been gaining more and more popularity. From the iPhone to the checkout at the grocery store, touch screen technology is literally everywhere. And, its popularity is growing.

A capacitive touchscreen panel is coated with a material (typically indium tin oxide) that conducts an electric current continuously across the sensor. When this electrical field is engaged with another field (i.e. a finger) the information is sent through the panel. Capacitive sensors work based on proximity and do not have to be touched directly to be engaged.

Touchscreen first became known in the second half of the 1960’s. The first project that included this type of technology was a computer-assisted learning terminal known as the PLATO project. Then it started to become familiar in stores at kiosks and as point of sale systems. Today it is utilized in ATMs and PDAs as well as gaming systems, computers, televisions and phones. There are other types of touchscreens available as well. Here is a brief look at some other touch screen technologies that exist.

Resistive

This type of touchscreen is composed of several layers. The most important of these layers are thin, metallic, and electrically conductive and resistive, separated only by a small space. When an object touches the screen the layers are connected and there is an electrical act. These types of screens are generally cheaper because they offer much less clarity than other touch technologies

Surface Acoustic Wave

Here an ultrasonic wave passes over the touchscreen panel. When the panel is touched the wave is absorbed. The wave registers the touch and sends the information back into the machine to be processed. These types of screens are very sensitive and many are easily damaged.

Dispersive Signal Technology

This was introduced in 2002 and uses sensors to detect the mechanical energy in the glass that occur due to the touch. It involves complex algorithms that interpret the information provided from the touch on the screen.

Touchscreen technology is numerous and involves other such technologies as strain gauge, optical imagining and acoustic pulse recognition. Many different ways to engage touch in technology have become popular. Some are clearly easier to incorporate than others and some are much more cost effective as well.

Touch technology can be confusing for those of us who don’t hold a degree in engineering. The thought that an electrical current passes through our fingers and interacts with a screen to result in something is amazing. Most of the time we take for granted the fact that complex technology helped to create the ATM we are using, the self-check out that we are rushing through or the iPod we just purchased. The technology is amazing and so is the way it can be put to use in our lives. We won’t see the end to the use of this technology any time soon as it is increasingly gaining popularity. It seems that touch technology is here to stay. And, even if we can’t quite figure out how it all works, we can still think it is cool.

Top 10 Useless Apps In Apple App Store, Apps For Just About Everything!

November 4th, 2009

Neal Hamou asked:

One of the more entertaining aspects of owning an iPhone is the plethora of apps that are available for your use and enjoyment. Some of them are really helpful, informative, or at least interesting: weather updates, celeb gossip, directions, movie times, etc. Then there are the completely superfluous apps that make you scratch your head and wonder why anyone would ever need that — right before you download it yourself.

iBeer is probably one of the most pointless apps, yet everyone seems to have it. It’s an app that turns your screen into a full pint glass of beer, and you can “drink” it by tilting your iPhone downwards. The beer then flows out of the pint glass. Sounds simple enough, yet it’s enough to reduce grown men to giggles when they all use it.

Tickle Me! is another app that seems to be mainly for the amusement factor – even if that factor does wear off pretty quickly. The app enables your touchscreen to respond to you tickling it, with a slightly irritating child’s laugh.

One that still makes no sense is Hold On, an app where you hold your finger in one spot on the touch screen for as long as you can. That’s it. This could probably be amusing for a bunch of drunken people who are pretending to be sober, but that’s about it.

Everyone loves to pop bubble wrap, which is most likely why the Bubble Wrap app is so popular. It just fills your screen with bubble wrap that you “pop” by touching each bubble.

While this one doesn’t do it anything useful, it certainly is cool – the PhoneSaber. It basically turns your touchscreen into a light saber, complete with visuals and sounds. It’s pretty awesome, yet there seems to be limited things you can do with it. Challenge your friends to a duel, maybe?

One that may seem silly, but has popped up at concerts and rock shows a lot lately, is the Virtual Zippo. Gone are the days when you hold up a lighter at shows if something moves you – now you have the virtual version. This is admittedly better than people just holding up their cell phones, which has always looked silly.

CoinFlip is another that goes into the “is that really necessary?” category, yet everyone seems to have it. It does exactly what its name indicates – it flips a coin.

A pretty amusing app is the Abacus, which seemingly goes against everything the iPhone really is – cutting edge technology. But again, maybe for the drunk folks trying to figure out how much money they have at the end of the night, this might work.

Too tired to yell enthusiastically for your sports team of choice? Then the “Wooo!” app may be for you. It’s a button that shows up on your touchscreen, and every time you hit it, a tinny voice says “wooo!” Very exciting.

Lastly, there is the I Can Has Cheezburger app, which sends you an update every time there’s a new location posted. Who doesn’t need that?

There’s something compelling about some of these iPod touch apps, even though they do absolutely nothing useful, and in fact, just mostly take up space on your iPhone or iPod touch. However trivial some of these applications may seem, they offer enjoyment to the hundreds of thousands of users who download them. After all, isn’t that the point of these applications?

Alice Erin asked:

The latest brand iPod portable media players designed and marketed by Apple Inc. was launched in 2001. Known for its capacity to record and store songs in much large number than other media players, it also serve as external data storage devices.

It is possible for the user to transfer music to the devices with the help of Apple’s iTunes software. The user can also transfer photos, videos, video games, and calendars to iPods, making it more technically more sophisticated. The Apple iPods have created a record by making a sale of 110 million unit’s world wide making it the best digital audio player that ever had got launched in history.

It was the during the manufacturing of various electronic devices like digital cameras, and camcorders, that Apple came to know the clumsy useless condition of musical devices making them to get into the production of iPods an alternative to the existing media players. It took around one year for Apple to get the product developed and launched. On October 23, 2001, Apple unveiled iPods with the caption “1000 songs in your pocket,” which was an instant hit in the market.

iPod was named by Vinnie Chieco, a freelance copy writer and was demonstrated in the public for the first time in New Jersey in March 1998. But it again took two years to begin the commercial use. It was in November 2003, the trademark got registered. Apple Inc. launched its first limited edition iPods in December 2002. Later a special edition of its fourth generation monochrome iPod was introduced by Apple.

Apple also had to face criticisms as the advertised battery life was found differing from the original one. It was resulted with a couple of law suits getting filed against the company which was later settled by offering a free battery replacement.
